It is important to recognise that dating has thus far been carried out on BRICK and TILE samples.

The purpose of further validation work is to extend the methodology to more complex materials. We list a few of these below.

  • Materials containing food or other organic residues
(in which case mass loss on heating to 500 deg C = mass loss due to dehydroxylation + mass loss due to residues being burned off).

  • Glazes
(remove or not? if so, how? (Grinding the glaze off produces very high temperatures we have tried!))

  • Burial environment
(presence of salts, dehydration / rehydration of these on heating/ subsequent aging following cooling).
